Controlling spin dynamics in paramagnetic systems for applications in quantum information science, materials science and biology

The Meeting:

Announcing the third Molecular Magnetism in North America Workshop (MAGNA-2023) to be held December 10-15, 2023 at the Granlibakken Tahoe Resort and Conference Center in Tahoe City, CA. The theme of this year’s meeting is controlling spin dynamics in paramagnetic systems for applications in quantum information science, materials science and biology.

The workshop brings together researchers in chemistry, physics and biology towards gaining an understanding of controlling the structure and environment of spin-systems. Research focused on spin systems for quantum information science, electronic materials, catalytic processes, and excited-state processes in materials and biology, requires an understanding of the role of vibrational modes, geometry, symmetry, magnetic exchange coupling, and dipolar interactions. The program addresses the factors that affect spin-dynamics, and the magnitude and direction of electronic coupling between molecular localized states and complex environments. The meeting promises to encompass inspiring and engaging discussion near beautiful Lake Tahoe.

The meeting will be held at Granlibakken Resort, a historic lodge on Lake Tahoe, with ski/snowboarding/sledding, spa, pool/hot tub, adventure ropes course, direct hiking access to the Tahoe Rim Trail, and walking distance to Tahoe City restaurants and shops (https://granlibakken.com). Reno Airport is 55 miles northeast of Tahoe City, with a reservation-only shuttle that serves North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe City. The San Francisco International Airport is 214 miles to the southwest.

Tahoe City California is situated on the northwestern shore of Lake Tahoe at the headwaters of the Truckee River. Highway 89 skirts the western shore of the lake, and the main part of town is at a fork in the road where Highway 89 heads northwest to the town of Truckee, 14.5 miles away. During winter, the Tahoe City activities center around snow due to the high concentration of quality ski resorts near Tahoe City. Nearby ski resorts include Alpine Meadows, which is 7 miles to the west and is connected to Palisades Tahoe formerly known as Squaw Valley), Palisades Tahoe: 7.5 miles from Tahoe City, Homewood Mountain Resort: 6 miles to the south (near the western shore of Lake Tahoe), Northstar: 17 miles to the north, Diamond Peak: 17 miles to the northeast, Mt Rose Ski Tahoe 25 miles to the northeast, and Sugar Bowl which is 24 miles to the northwest. In keeping with its ski town status, there are various Tahoe City ski shops and outdoor stores. The pedestrian friendly main street has many dining and drinking options ranging from upscale gastro-pubs to cozy cafes, There are also lakeside eateries with views across Lake Tahoe.

Registration

Registration Fee: $280.00

Conference-rate lodging and shuttle reservations from Reno-Tahoe airport can be made through secure access. The deadline for registration is Nov 20, 2023. Registration for the meeting and lodging accommodation can be found here.

Abstract Submission

Abstracts can be emailed directly to nfrank@unr.edu using the template found here. If requesting consideration for a contributed talk, please select “oral presentation” on page 1 of the abstract form with your submission. Abstracts for contributed talks will be selected based on scientific area and quality of the abstract. The deadline for abstract submission is Nov 20, 2023.

Travel

The meeting will take place in “low season” in the Tahoe area. This typically means that ski resorts may not yet have heavy snowfalls, and that hiking trails are open. The possibility however exists this year for heavy snows by early December and the ski resorts and cross country skiing/sledding are expected to be open and fully operational.

Air travel can be booked directly to the Reno-Tahoe airport with shuttle reservations to Granlibakken possible via the Granlibakken registration form. Alternatively, air travel can be made more economically to either nearby Sacramento (132 miles, 2.5 hours) with travel to Reno via car, bus or train, or to San Francisco with travel to Reno by car, bus or train (3.5 hours). If driving from the west, please be aware that heavy snow can lead to chain controls and temporary road closures to the Sierras from the West. Given the importance of interstate traffic, however, routes are typically cleared within a couple of hours.
